| Details
of our new projects are listed below. These include supporting
a number of Operating Companies to undertake a Biodiversity Risk
and Opportunity Assessment, a review of the scientific
analysis and assessment of the potential impacts of tobacco farming
and supporting BAT Uganda to assess the health of freshwater and woodland
ecosystems within the growing region.
In 2005 and 2006 one of the Partnership initiatives integrated biodiversity
into the Business Enabler Survey Tool (BEST) which BAT uses with
its third party suppliers, and the Social Responsibility in Tobacco
Production (SRTP) tool, through which BAT ensures and encourages
continual improvement in social and environmental responsibility
among tobacco producers. This year, the Partnership will review
the scores and feedback to improve understanding of the extent
to which embedding biodiversity in such tools actually drives improvements
in biodiversity performance.
We are very pleased to be supporting a project to protect the
critically endangered Cao Vit Gibbon (Nomascus nasutus), one of
the world's rarest primates in Cao Bang Province, Vietnam, the
only location in the world where this species is currently known
to exist.
